This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Whatever happened to "It has to be free speech all the time"...

No. I'm still sniffing the glue regularly.

I just glanced up at the top of this forum and I see this:

The RPGPundit's Own Forum For discussing the Pundit or Things That Interest Him

So If something isn't a.) about Pundit or b.) Something that interests him
then it's off topic for this forum. Seems pretty clear to me. Not sure what the confusion is about.

Doctor Jest

Quote from: Will;813910It does have to do with gaming, it just wasn't immediately obvious. Her speech was about how gaming culture is fueled by boredom of male students, of how educators should engage with gaming rather than vilifying/demeaning it.

These are topics of great relevance for gamers.

This is a subforum of things of interest to Pundit. I thought that 'how gaming interacts with culture at large' was of interest to Pundit.

OHT disagreed or didn't dive too deeply into it, that's his prerogative. Maybe Pundit will see this and say it is of interest, maybe he won't.

If he doesn't, then since that's video games she's talking about, it'd probably be appropriate for the Other Games forum with perhaps a bit more of a preamble stating about how educators should engage with video games to help students and centering the discussion more around that as the central point rather than focusing on the gender divide in education as focal.
"How can educators engage with students through video games" is a pretty valid and interesting topic. Just maybe not for this forum.

You don't see why 'I think Pundit would find this topic interesting' might be a valid reason to post something?

Because if it ACTUALLY means 'discussing the Pundit or things he decides to post about,' then that's what the title should be.

Edit: But rereading 'what this forum is about,' I guess I'm just wrong. My bad.
This forum is great in that the moderators aren\'t jack-booted fascists.

Unfortunately, this forum is filled with total a-holes, including a bunch of rape culture enabling dillholes.

So embracing the \'no X is better than bad X,\' I\'m out of here. If you need to find me I\'m sure you can.

Compared to TBP, this place is a godsend. No doubt about that. But the whole

"rah rah rah free speech" rants sound hollow in light of arbitrary thread closings like Will's.

I can read. I know what the subforum says. But how is its usage any different from TBP's much maligned "rule 10"?

Seems that people here like the idea of pure free speech when it comes to criticizing other places.

One Horse Town

You lot are hilarious. Put as much effort into the main forum as you do into the crap in this sub-forum and the front page of the RPG forum wouldn't have 5 day old threads on it. We used to have threads from 'yesterday' as the oldest threads on the front page here. Then the fuck-sticks came (yes, i'm talking about you if you think i'm talking about you, obviously) ably abetted by some folk who should know better and we're stuck with a bunch of folk who are more interested in talking about anything but fucking games.

That's what toy throwing looks like folks.

Don't like it - tough, go post about games. If you don't want to do that then what the fuck are you doing here?

ArrozConLeche

If you want people to post exclusively about games, it would make more sense if there wasn't  an off-topic forum where members can open threads. Problem solved.

Oh, but I forgot, "it's the Pundit's forum, so we get to do what we want. 'Free Speech!' But only when we say so. But free speech, totally!! "

Close all the threads you want, but don't pretend you're all about free speech if you don't want people to call bullshit.

If you don't want 'fucksticks', then ban them. Otherwise, suck my fucking dick, punk.

Do whatever helps you with cope with your cognitive dissonance.

Panjumanju

The discourse in the original thread was civil, obviously, so I don't see why people keep bringing up the 'free speech' nonsense; its closure clearly has nothing to do with censorship, just being off-topic. It was not obvious to me in reading the original post that it related to games at all.

Which is why I put the word "appear" in that sentence, to indicate that it wasn't immediately obvious that the post was supposed to relate to gaming because the post didn't appear to have anything to do with gaming.

Did you forget that you are ignoring me?

QuoteThese are topics of great relevance for gamers.
Maybe it is relevant for video gamers. VGs aren't something I care about. As a tabletop gamer I don't find the educational system particularly  relevant for gaming. How our education system is failing a lot of males is important for the society I live in, my family, and our future. Any gaming relevance is trivial in comparison to these issues.
.

Whether Pundit finds it relevant is his call. But you knew that already.

I am a strong believer in free speech.

(1) I feel absolutely no compulsion to listen to every little thing someone takes it into their head to utter. If you or anyone comes over to my house and I decide I'm tired of listening to you, then I can tell you to stop talking about any particular thing I don't feel like listening to or to take a hike. That doesn't take away your right to free speech. You are free to go outside and stand on the public street and yammer away. I am free to close my windows and turn on the TV. Nothing about "free speech" means you are entitled to a captive audience.

(2) This forum has a limited purpose.
  • Gaming (mostly table top, non-story gaming).
  • And shit Pundit wants to yammer about.

(3) Constructing the connection between (1) and (2) is left as an exercise for the reader who needs practice with constructing arguments instead of deconstructing meaning.

ArrozConLeche

Sure. Next time people start yammering about the 'freeh speach' 'round these parts, I'll know not to take them seriously.

Incidentally, all of the arguments here are eerily like the arguments used against the OBS decision. The situation would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

Oh well. I think I got the answers I needed.

Bren

You need to titrate your glue. You are getting way too potent a dose.

Threads about non-gaming stuff gets moved to other forums if applicable, threads in the Pundit forum not created by Pundit and not directly related to him get closed all the time - some of them he reopens if he is interested.

I find it funny that someone who just said "suck my Dick, punk" to a mod with no mention of it  is screaming censorship.  To redline the Irony meter he used cognitive dissonance in the same post.
