SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What should be done about Off Topic?

Quote from: ZalmoxisI say keep the off-topic forum, for the same reason why you keep a trash can in your house.

To continue your analogy, you also empty a trash can when it gets full. And some things are so disgusing you don't bother with the trash can but throw them straight into the dumpster outside.

Or if your trash can gets infested with roaches...

See, the forum isn't your home. It's entirely electronic. Trash can simply be deleted. Piff! Gone in a little cloud of electrons. No more! We don't have to keep our electronic trash.

Why not just deleting all the existing OT threads, then regularly (say, once every couple of weeks) do the same?

Will you also be banning people from restarting the conversations that were cut off in mid stream become some moderator decided they were tired of reading about it?

Nah, bannings too good for them, the bastards!

I don't think it's going to hurt much if threads that have been inactive for a week or four get nuked into oblivion, but at the same time I can't see an awful lot of point to it, other than stopping people scrolling back through years worth of old OT posts and resurrecting stuff.

I've changed my mind, not that it matters, but I now say nuke it from orbit.  It's the only way to be sure.

Mostly, people will be too lazy to restart them, unless it's about Nox or rpg.net.
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

So you're saying the two topics that make OT a cess pool will be the two topics that are constantly restarted, while good conversations will be killed before their time?

No thanks.
