SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

two_fishes ban--what's up with that?

I don't want this place to turn into the kind of forum where people post stupid images instead of actual content; we already have a 4chan for that.

And I would add that a turn in this direction, ie. if everyone started posting the way you were posting in those threads, Kyle, would end up being disruptive to this site's functioning.

Quote from: brettmb;324964He was given a temporary ban for blatantly ignoring the new rule in the same thread that it was announced:

"Note: Please stop Posting Animated Gifs - 08-27-2009, 11:13 PM
Particularly if these are sole-responses to a thread post and serve no other purpose than to try to fake being witty. "

Using a GIF that's among the Smilies provided by this VERY SITE?
Are you kidding me??

Quote from: brettmb;325006I already lifted the ban about an hour ago. All special smilies are now gone, save for the ones in the dropdown list. That privilege has been abused, so like what's done to spoiled little children, it gets taken away.

This is frankly retarded. A GIF "disrupts the site" now?
You must be kidding me. Whatever.

Before you all get on Brett's back for this - remember that tech issues don't always necessarily match up 100% to the ideals of free speech.

Also take note, that it was largely Brett's work that got two-fishes off the hook (ha, pun!).

Its a joke reference he was doing related to the show CSI: MIAMI.

The main character is infamous for doing a pun or dramatic one liner at the beginning of an episode, putting on (or taking off his sunglasses) - then the scream from the rock band THE Who starts off the show's theme muisic.

If you've never watched the show - then you wouldn't get the joke..

A .GIF that appears at the bottom of every single post a person makes, yeah.  Bandwidth issues aside (which must be considerable), I find them aesthetically displeasing, so I grant my approval.

I don't understand why animated GIFs linked from other places would affect the site itself, as opposed to perceived performance for folks who have slow conections. Maybe that's the point. But that's not really very important to me.

What is important is that Pundit must understand that he's crossed another line, even with the retraction of two_fishes ban--especially because he's retaining this expansive definition of "spamming". There may be justifications for engaging in such heavy moderation but it doesn't help at all in terms of fostering open discourse and a marketplace of ideas.

RPGPundit

I don't see that "open discourse" or "the marketplace of ideas" gets affected positively at all by having a guy come on here and posting over and over again that "Forge Rules" or "the RPGPundit sucks" and adding nothing else to the conversation.
Nor do I see anything being taken away from those ideas by putting a stop to this kind of thing; on the contrary, as that kind of repetitive noise just lessens the signal ratio here.

You may not be aware of this, but it's possible to go back and look at a poster's history to see what he's actually been saying. Two fish's first post included words like "people have a point when they criticize the Ron Edwards and the Forge" and "the Forge community are often pretentious and dismissive of people who don't see things their way."

There were two immediate replies to him. One accused him of "a mind fuck of the worst kind thinly disguised in game terminology," and Joe just called him a troll. Ed then decided he was a fucking troll, and a lot of regulars were all "WHOA look at ED he's AWESOME."

So, you know. The guy says "yeah, a lot about the Forge sucks, here's what I'm getting out of it." He gets the usual ration of shit for saying anything positive whatsoever about the Forge, and gets defensive. SURPRISE.
