The irony is some people are offended by RPGNet threads, so they think no one should be allowed to have them. What forum does that remind me of?

I'm not offended, I just think they drag the site down. Pundy differs and it's his call. I disagree, but I'm just about going to manage to contain my tears.

With that said, I probably won't post more in this thread (unless obviously I feel like it, I'm a creature of whim) since I made the point and Pundy stated his view on it. I'm off to his forum to start a new thread on keetoms and to ask for vibes.

I agree. I'm not sure why we ditched the politics forum if it was all just going to creep into a another forum anyway.

There's some important differences. For instance, the following dynamics are now possible on this site, thanks to the very existence of this subforum and the way it is handled.

A moderator opens a thread to discuss, not roleplaying games, but our discussion of roleplaying games. It's once removed, but all the more pertinent (in this case).

Another moderator bumbles into the thread and says What The Fuck, I'm going to move your thread, mod 1, into Pundit's forum because it's not about games. So there!

Finally, the Pundit stumbles across the thread, which had apparently eluded him earlier, and declares himself not amused. As his bemusement is the sole rationale for threads being allowed in his own playground, he goes "Clonk, Thread closed".

Only on TheRPGSite can you have three mods creating that sort of situation. TheRPGSite Moderation Team - here to entertain you.

All of which goes to show instead of trying to stop something, you find a way to harness it since it can't be stopped. What kills me is that forums like these don't require participation, and people can vote with their free time and interest.

It's not necessarily that simple. E.g. if a case could be made that the discussion culture that's currently brewing in RpgSite-Tangency seeps over to the RPGSite's discussion on gaming, that's a reason to be a bit more alarmed about what's going on.

I'm not that serene that a thing that brought down RPG.net will never happen at this site, just because people shout "We're Mos Eisley" or whatever. Naivety and self-delusion, if you ask me.

Indeed, this is true.  I'm old enough to remember RPG.net when it was described as "the wild west",  and was criticized by some for having a far too aggressive culture of flaming.

However, there's one big difference between there and here that makes it unlikely that you'll see this place changing into the kind of repression you see over there: this site belongs to me.
If I drop dead and the site continues, then sure, I figure that it would be very difficult for successive admins or mods to maintain the same atmosphere and strict adherence to the free-speech principle.  

However, as long as I am around, there's no way that'll slip because I simply won't allow it to.

Also, as pointed out, calling the Pundit's forum "tangency" is pretty ridiculous for the same reason: me.
The Pundit's forum is as likely to end up having a discussion about rpgs as it is to have a discussion about politics, because it is not an "off-topic" subforum, it is a subforum with a specific theme of "whatever the fuck the RPGPundit wants to talk about".

And by definition, anything he doesn't want to talk about is also not allowed.  So any politics I don't give a shit about, anything to do with any subject I don't give a shit about, gets closed. That doesn't create an environment conducive to turning it into a behemoth that will overwhelm the site.
