This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

But it might be worth putting some money aside for possible future expenses. You might some day have technical problems with therpgsite, or want to add some feature or advertise it, and not have anyone competent offering their help for free. Then some extra cash will be handy.

Or you could use it to subsidise getting rpgs out more cheaply to Urguayan kids. We know the exchange rate fucks them, making Western-published rpgs too expensive for them. Maybe start an rpg library? Plenty of rpg clubs at unis do that with any spare fees they have. I don't think anyone here would think that's a bad use of spare money from advert revenues - getting rpgs out to people who like them but can't afford them.

If you used any excess funds in this fashion, I'd vote yes in a heartbeat. It's a really good idea.

I gotta say that I'm also fond of the idea of letting our publisher friends rent adspace here too, as a possible alternative.

that would be cool!   ad money for the site, with the excess going into the "uruguayan kids gamer fund'.  do it!

I voted no as I don't mind donating a bit.  But I don't mind ads as long they don't slow things too much - I'm on dial up at home.

Fine by me, so long as they stay at the top of the page and don't invade actual messages as they do on some free meassage boards.

I would never EVER do the "green underlined ads in people's posts" thing.  I hate that very very much.

I find google ads to be the least obnoxious web advertising currently in use and since I use firefox annoying ones are easily blocked, so throw a few up and lets see how they look.

I voted yes have adverts to pay for the site, but despite the caveats of the "yes" answer, if you make more money than the place costs, go ahead and pocket the difference. You're providing, promoting and making efforts to keep this site going. No reason you shouldn't get some pocket money out of that. If making money was your aim then that changes the nature of the place; if making money is just an incidental side benefit, then things go along smoothly.

But it might be worth putting some money aside for possible future expenses. You might some day have technical problems with therpgsite, or want to add some feature or advertise it, and not have anyone competent offering their help for free. Then some extra cash will be handy.

+1 endorsement.

I wouldn't mind having ads from publishers that post here, by the way.

I don´t understand:
How can any cash be generated by google ads?
I mean we are like smart guys and gals, who would click on a google ad?

I'm sceptical, too, Settembrini. But "what if the ads make no money?" is a different question to the one we're being asked. Let's focus on this one for now.

I'd rather support the site out of my own pocket and not have any Google Ads. I've found that internet advertising in this manner, Google or otherwise, is one of the most annoying recent aspects of the internet itself - and this is coming from a Happy Capitalist.

I voted yes to Google, and think Kyle's idea regarding the allocation of excess funds is an excellent one.

I would like to point out that google's ads are tailored to the site using their patented pigeon techology.  It's absolutely true. Those pigeons will serve up ads that are of interest to the users, not just random guano.

who would click on a google ad?

For me it's usually a mistake, I get impatient waiting for a page to load-even with my high speed DSL (Yeah I know, patience is a virtue grub worm, right?)-and I click on what I think is a topic or forum, but in actuality is an ad space.

Yeah, advertisements only work on the weak-minded. It never ever happens that there might be something worth looking at...

Of course no one clicks on Google ads!  How did they afford to pay a billion for youtube though?
