This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I've set up a forum for these until I can set up a better more permanent arrangement next year.

This is a warning to anyone wishing to start a play by post game thread - In the final version of the area the first post of the thread will be displayed on EVERY page of the thread - so use it for your announcements and updates. Don't start the adventure in that post!!

Are you going to start up the dwarf campaign again? If so, I am certain that Thelon Stonecleaver would love to join in. :D

I am sorry to admit that I've never even tried play by post. How does it work? Are their any customs one should know about before trying it?

The DM usually sets up any rules. The biggest etiquette is not to post in PbP threads if you're not the DM or one of the players. Very rude.
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock and roll to me.

You can talk all you want about theory, craft, or whatever. But in the end, it's still just new ways of looking at people playing make-believe and having a good time with their friends. Intellectualize or analyze all you want, but we've been playing the same game since we were 2 years old. We just have shinier books, spend more money, and use bigger words now.

Essentially, each player posts one or more things, roughly in an informalized turn system.

1) Some in-character text (perhaps what the character is thinking or saying)
2) Any applicable information related to abilities, skill checks, etc. that the character would like to attempt
3) Any relevant out of character questions.

Each player plays roughly in turn making sure that everyone gets a chance to post before the DM advances the story.

I don't think there are any hard or fast rules (other than the ones your DM might set).  The only real requirement for games played by post is patience - these games are inherently slower given the medium.

Plenty of sites have PbP forums where you can see a good example of what a game thread looks like.  Hope this helped.

not anytime soon (though, oddly enough, most of you seem to be on this forum now).  running a PBP takes a lot more work than i figured it would have, and i just don't have the time or energy to maintain one right now.

however, if someone else wants to run something, i might just be interested... :)

Thanks for the desciptions. That sounds potentially interesting.
