SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

You know, you might be right. :D

But then again, so did the oracle at Delphi.
We have been hurt.
We are bleeding.
We will survive.
We will evolve.
We will become stronger.
We will become more than the sum of our parts.
We are The Damnation army.
We are Legion.

Yep, we appear to be down again. I should find out why and when it will be back up shortly.

BOZ

oy, good luck!  hope you don't have to reboot like Limper did.

We're back. It was just a short server crash.

Bullitt

And we're back down. I doubt this will take long to resolve.

Hopefully in another day or so we'll be moved onto our own server.

Knightcrawler

Yeah it was there and then it was gone for me.

I had no problem earlier today with it.  I was on until 2 pm EST this afternoon.

could it be that you are getting more activity with the dissolution of NTL that is causing the problem?  it seems that growing forums have growing pains.  :)

Yeah but any recent increases in the userbase has been minimal in teh past week or two.  If fact at this point THe Rpg Site has surpassed SO in membership.

it's not so much the adding new members that can be a problem, but the activity level of both new and old members that can tip the scales.

i suspect, though i could be wrong, that pooka expected some numbers and was ready for it, and had enough experience at this sort of thing to know how to prepare for that.  not saying that bullitt doesn't, but he may not have been fully prepared for a spike in activity.

OK, here's a rundown on what's going on.

The old SO was on the Nothingland server. When Nothingland was going down, I learned that we were being evicted. I was about to throw in the towel, but then a friend of mine who works for an ISP offered me web space to keep it going. At that time I decided to go with VBulletin. Day 1 of the thing being in place, traffic exploded and great quantities of *ahem* attachments were posted. The rest of the week goes by and I looked at the stats. We had already gone three times the amount of space we were allowed, and the server usage was higher than we had agreed upon. I had Cravin ask about getting more space, and the answer was a resounding no, unless we wanted to pay good money for it.

So, I pruned the *ahem* attachments down to the a few threads that I personally found to my liking, and then got to the business of what to do with the site. I opted to buy a server, and Ebayed off some of the more valuable books in my collection - included in this was the ultra rare Dune: Chronicles of the Imperium. Anyway, between that and a number of donations from some generous community members, we had the money to buy a server. I bought the server, and the only reason that what happened today was possible is because the server isn't configured yet. It should be on the thing by next week (hopefully), and at that point we supposedly won't be limited by the interferance of the ISP server admins.

Down to backup the database. Posts made on SO after this backup will be lost.

And now it's good and down. The DNS got updated before work was finished.
