Title: Moderation - that dirty, dirty M word
Post by: Guest (Deleted) on February 28, 2006, 06:25:25 PM

Unlike Nothingland this site will eventually be moderated.  The site will NOT be moderated as heavily as most sites. I'm not interested in seeing pot shots and wisecracks snuffed - they are too much fun.  I'm not interested in having posters feel that they can't call a jizzgobbler to the floor and call him on the poo he flings.  What moderators will do, primarily, is move thread as necessary to correct forums and watch out for protracted conflicts.

Let's be honest here - some folks don't like some folks.  Fine.  Not everyone on the board wants/needs to know. If necessary I'll set each person on the other's ignore list. If that still doesn't work it is grounds for being banned.

I don't want to lay down a set of exacting specifications about what constitutes harassment. Also, some forums will be more heavily watched than others. The soapbox for instance is prone to infighting.  Like any good bar owner I'll allow the patrons to have fun, but when you start breaking the furniture it's gonna be EVERYBODY involved out.  And "I didn't start it" won't fly.

I hope I never have to ban anyone.  I really hope a permaban is never necessary.  But the pessimist in me says that's wishful thinking.

In the meanwhile, carry on and voice your thoughts on what you consider too much or too little moderation.

Should I bother asking about avatar rules or should I just see what I can get away with?

If I throw up you're banned for a day.  I have a cast iron stomach.  You figure it out. :D

I wonder Pooka about this soapbox forum. I fear it will only bring us disharmony and strife.

Note that I certainly hope this does not turn out to be the case. Just knowing the histories of some of the posters likely to be here, "civility" does not come to mind.

I know. I'm trying to find a strong, firm moderator for that particular forum - one who's done it before, one who's more than capacle of the job.

So if you don't throw up I'll be banned? You have a weak stomach?

I'm terribly confused.

The lie there is I have a copper kettle stomach, not cast iron.  And I must do more than throw up - I must have a seizure.

Truthfully though - this is the one forum I'm going to avoid the schtick because it's gonna cause too much trouble.

Here's what I answered to a similar question on nuttest
Quote from: Myself

- for the obvious removal of spammers, human or bots
- for assigning the various punishments deserved for not putting the NWS tags and the like

but, unlike some of the previous posters, I like the mods to do a little more than that.
- meta plots can be fun from time to time and they can require mods implication
- mods assigning titles is a funny tradition
- mods experimenting stuff makes us react to the board, sometimes even reconsider what it is. I surely didn't like every change that have been made to the NKL /.../... /NTL boards, but I liked that the mods/admins were interested enough in the board to make them. Being a mod is a thankless job (except after you ban someone: wether you liked it or not, you can be sure someone will thank you for it ) so they should have some toys to play with. Otherwise they will just be at our service, and I don't wish that to my worst enemy

What I wouldn't want as a mod is a rule lawyer or an abusive script kiddie.
This is why I'd so like to have one of our previous mods here. Maybe I'm just a little worried by nature.

Okay, you're approaching this the wrong way.  When I was a mod, I used this tactic all the time.  The admins and mods would be like: "We should be hands off in Church & State, and I'd be like "Oh Noes, they're gonna fight and stuff, and then there're going to be feelings hurt, and why can't we all get along! Oh golly gee noooo!"

Then I learned about the beauty of the bitch slap. I learned if you spend all the time trying to make this a place for everyone, it's going to end up not being for you, and if you're management, that's the key to board survival IMHO.

Ah, knock-down drag out fights can be fun, but if it's been going on for 5 pages, no further points are being made, and no one's laughing at the jokes anymore, then a mod should probably step in.

I mean, hell, look back at the old Cyragnome-Izrador debates on NKL/NTL.  Aside from the occasional broadside, they were pretty civil.

Why on earth would anyoneASK to be a mod? I've modded three forums, currently still a mod at one, and had to be practically begged at each site to do it. It's not a job that brings much satisfaction, although it's nice being able to see IP addies.

Some people, like possibly Cyberzombie, have the right personality where they actually enjoy being a Mod.  I myself wouldn't mind taking a shot at it.

I made the offer because I want to help out.  I haven't actively helped on a message board in a while.  I'm always broke when fund drives come along, so I pretty much have to help with manual labour if I'm going to.  :)

So if I get asked, I will happily do whatever labour is required.

A lot of the my desire to one day mod is for some of the same reasons.  The other is just plain curiosity. :D

Pretty much "ditto".  I never seem to catch the boat for the fund drives, for some reason, but I'd love to help out.  I'm also curious about how the whole thing works.

And, if I can catch a few of the "whiney" bullets for the Powers That Be, I'm happy to do so -- although I suspect I'd need a macro that sent a response saying "grow the fuck up".

I think a good set of rules of thumb for choosing mods should be:

1) If someone asks to be a mod, they shouldn't be a mod.

2) If someone who has been a mod before and appeared to do a good job offers to be mod because they realize how much work it is and want to help out, they can be a mod.

3) Try to choose people who are good at diffusing situations and generally have people's respect without having any kind of actual power.

Just my experience.

I think this is generally good advice. I'd also add that I think that posters who are polarizing by their nature probably shouldn't be mods.

For your consideration...

"Exactness and neatness in moderation is a virtue,  but carried to extremes narrows the mind."  - Francois de Salignac Fenelon

"Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice."  - Thomas Paine

"Moderation is a fatal thing. . . . Nothing succeeds like excess."  - Oscar Wilde

"Only actions give life strength; only moderation gives it charm."  - Jean Paul Richter

"The choicest pleasures of life lie within the ring of moderation."  - Martin Tupper

"Moderation is the inseparable companion of wisdom, but with it genius has not even a nodding acquaintance."  - Charles Caleb Colton

"To go beyond the bounds of moderation is to outrage humanity."  - Blaise Pascal

We are not moderate.

But since we are moderating the role playing forums, we feel have good reason to go all Elfen Lied on any trouble makers.  Especially if they are being passive-aggressive.
