This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Get big bird and snuffalupagus to sing it, market it to kids, and you could make a fortune with the right market!

Hey!

Okay, you're approaching this the wrong way.  When I was a mod, I used this tactic all the time.  The admins and mods would be like: "We should be hands off in Church & State, and I'd be like "Oh Noes, they're gonna fight and stuff, and then there're going to be feelings hurt, and why can't we all get along! Oh golly gee noooo!"

Then I learned about the beauty of the bitch slap. I learned if you spend all the time trying to make this a place for everyone, it's going to end up not being for you, and if you're management, that's the key to board survival IMHO.

Ah, knock-down drag out fights can be fun, but if it's been going on for 5 pages, no further points are being made, and no one's laughing at the jokes anymore, then a mod should probably step in.

I mean, hell, look back at the old Cyragnome-Izrador debates on NKL/NTL.  Aside from the occasional broadside, they were pretty civil.

Quote from: Harry JoyWhy on earth would anyoneASK to be a mod? I've modded three forums, currently still a mod at one, and had to be practically begged at each site to do it. It's not a job that brings much satisfaction, although it's nice being able to see IP addies.

Some people, like possibly Cyberzombie, have the right personality where they actually enjoy being a Mod.  I myself wouldn't mind taking a shot at it.

I made the offer because I want to help out.  I haven't actively helped on a message board in a while.  I'm always broke when fund drives come along, so I pretty much have to help with manual labour if I'm going to.  :)

So if I get asked, I will happily do whatever labour is required.

A lot of the my desire to one day mod is for some of the same reasons.  The other is just plain curiosity. :D

Pretty much "ditto".  I never seem to catch the boat for the fund drives, for some reason, but I'd love to help out.  I'm also curious about how the whole thing works.

And, if I can catch a few of the "whiney" bullets for the Powers That Be, I'm happy to do so -- although I suspect I'd need a macro that sent a response saying "grow the fuck up".

I think a good set of rules of thumb for choosing mods should be:

1) If someone asks to be a mod, they shouldn't be a mod.

2) If someone who has been a mod before and appeared to do a good job offers to be mod because they realize how much work it is and want to help out, they can be a mod.

3) Try to choose people who are good at diffusing situations and generally have people's respect without having any kind of actual power.

Just my experience.

I think this is generally good advice. I'd also add that I think that posters who are polarizing by their nature probably shouldn't be mods.
