This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Changing Theory to "Practical Tips And Advice"

As we've seen, the phrase "gaming theory" carries a lot of weight with it.  Where the detractors go, the defendants will follow, and vice-versa.

This site is about freely speaking your mind about gaming, and I think we're all cool with that, otherwise we wouldn't be here.  But could I make the suggestion that renaming our theory forum to "Practical Tips" or "Practical Tips and Advice" might help re-focus things towards a useful end?  Thoughts?

I strongly support this.  I don't think theory should be what we aim for here, practical advice seems much more in keeping with the site's philosophy.

Shouldn't the main forum be about pratical tips and advice?

Maybe drop the "Theory" from the title and just leave that section as "Game Design."   Or possibly "Homebrewing, Houseruling, and Game Design."

I thought the main forum was just for general chinwagging about rpgs.

Homebrewing, Houseruling and Game Design isn't bad either, but I don't think anywhere has a practical tips forum currently and I think people would find it useful.

I thought Actual Play and Craft of Gameplay was for practical game tips?

I think it is, but personally I find that rather an odd combo of topics.

As mentioned there, I'm unconvinced. And as mentioned there, I see the main difference between design and technique to be publication, and the intent of the forum, being accomodating to home brews and house rules, to be friendly to homebrewers.

If you want to find a less loaded word than theory, that's fine. Maybe just drop it and leave it as game design. Theory talk is still going to happen there.

I like this, even thought it's ungainly. It implicitly includes both design analysis and actively designing new games, which is what RPG Theory should be about IMO, yet it avoids the implication that discussion will focus on grand unified theories.
