SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Can we unsubscribe from subfora here?

Not sure if this software permits it.  On rpg.net I can choose which fora I see, I would quite like to do the same here and so stop even encountering off topic (and possibly the Amber forum).  Is that feasible?

Yeah, I know I can stop reading off-topic, I intend to, but this would also be useful.

You mean like this Sample?

If you mean something different, how is it done at rpg.net?

You can collapse forums by clicking the icon. The system should remember your preferences for this.

You can show only specific forums by clicking its name (in yellow). This is a link to a specific forum that must be used each time.

Cool, I now have an off-topic free forum.  Thanks :D

Hmmm, Brett's approach doesn't help if you want to use the "New Posts" function.

I go back to the suggestion I had some time earlier - all subforums except Roleplaying should be subscriber-only. You should have to specifically sign up for them to see them. Like "My Groups" on rpg.net, so that not everyone has to see the Fitness subforum, or Creative Writing subforum, only those specifically interested in that stuff.

While we are at it, how about moving the Pundit's subforum to The Lounge? It has enough non-gaming stuff that it could well be there.

That might make sense if we had a fitness subforum or a creative writing subforum. But all we've got is off topic.

And RPGPundit's subforum, and the Electronic games subforum, and the Amber one, and so on. Lots of things that most roleplayers aren't interested in.

When I go to the bookstore, I like to be able to ask what new books they've got in. They don't just give me a list of all the new books, but the new books under the topics I'm interested in. Likewise, I should be able just see the new posts in the subforums which interest me. Same goes for any forum.

I'm going to discuss a re-organization with Pundit and the other admins/mods. I can't speak for others, but personally I don't like the idea of having to subscribe to specific forums to see them, because then they are too easy to miss.

And there's some reason you can't just not read them?

No offense to Balbinus, who I'm sure has a perfectly good reason for not being able to simply ignore OT, but this place shouldn't be about protecting people from themselves. If someone can't stand to read OT, but they do it anyway, then I wish them happiness in their own little personally created Hell. And I'm pretty sure that sort of lack of self control means that the OT forum (or Amber Forum, or electronic Games Forum, or whatever) is probably the least of their worries.

For me, no there's no reason I can't just not read them, I thought I recognised that upthread somewhere.  It's just if there's an easy way to filter stuff it makes it a tiny bit easier for me and I'm big on my own convenience.

pigames.net's solution, using the little - sign to collapse that forum, is sufficient to my own needs and I'm happy with that.  Well, needs is a bit strong, but sufficient to satisfy my idle whim of the moment sounds somehow less persuasive.

JamesV

I've collapsed the forum catagories that don't interest me, and it works well enough to put it out of sight and mind. I'm now trying much harder to follow and post on the RPG threads that interest me.

I had noticed this in my poking around. I really like it...it doesn't do much to de-ghettoize the Actual Play forum, but that just doesn't seem to get a lot of love anyway.
