SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Banner Ads on theRPGsite?

As a potential customer of the service I'll say I want them to look as awesome as possible and consequently prefer smaller over larger. I don't want to buy a big ugly ad that will annoy people (me included).

I know this is a new service for companies to advertise here but here's the rub:  The banners have to be noticeable.  As the person paying for the service, I have to believe that people will see my ads and not get squashed into a corner where people may not focus immediately.  The smaller size escaped my notice until I read this thread and saw testing had begun.   Maybe it's just me on that last point or maybe not *shrug*

Quote from: Jamfke;305957Bloody hell, PIG already has a banner up!  Of course, it helps that the owner of the company is an admin here.  Where do we sign up, and to whom do we send our monies?!?

And it caught my interest, so I clicked on the banner and went to their site, where I am currently browsing.

Can't promise I'll spend any money over there right now (state taxes due, car needs to be tagged, I got a big honking traffic ticket I had to pay), but it got me looking at least.

Damn that was quick.

I was expecting maybe a lag time of a week or so between the question and implementation.

It was an easy thing to implement. :p

This seems a topical thread (I thought we had discussed this before).

Oddly enough, Brett makes a good argument against banners.

Add banner ads. Won't make much of a difference. Whatever it takes.

Two things about the banners:

1) The clickable area extends beyond graphic. This is annoying because you get taken to the target when you didn't mean to.

2) It's a blind URL--I mean that although you get a sort of "tootip" popup, nothing at all appears in usual place in my browser that shows me the URL. Yes, I know the URL isn't really useful in this case (although it would be nice if it did show the place I was going to be taken to). It's still off-putting not to be able to see the detail.

1. Why are you clicking elsewhere on the header? There's nothing there other than the main logo, which is a separate link.

2. I have never seen an automated banner that shows you the URL.

Pseudoephedrine

I don't mind large, so long as it doesn't move. RPG.net often clogs up for me when I load a new forum b/c it's loading some annoying flash banner that slows the entire process down to a crawl.

Patience, people. Right now Brett's ads are up because he is the admin, and set up the testing, etc.
Within the next 24 hours I'm guessing there'll be instructions on how to advertise with us.

As a user, I have no objection.  Pundy puts enough time in here a little recompense is hardly out of order.

RPGPundit

Ok, its basically ready. If you want to advertise with us, the first step is to contact us, which you can do either by getting in touch with me directly, or by clicking the "advertise with us" link right under the banner.

Then after payment you will send a banner to Brett, and it'll be put up on the site for the allotted time. We reserve the right not to accept a banner that has offensive material, and banners much fit the specifications required by the site.

Costs are $30 per month, or $150 for six months (basically pay for five and get one month free).

Looks like you fixed it. Why click there? I dunno, but I did. Maybe to activate the window, or get the selection point out of a field, or something.

Quote2. I have never seen an automated banner that shows you the URL.
Could be I've never noticed before. Not a biggie.
