This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

An Idea for a companion site for the RPG site

Hey,

I had just be observing thing people were talking about and I have an Idea:

http://www.milscifi.squarespace.com

I made a shell of what could be the RPGsite companion site.

It has the ability to have an Amazon associate store where we can make ~9% comission on anything purchased through it. If we can get our regular people here to  by RPGs through it we may be able to pay for part of the hosting costs each month.

I can host Blogs, file downloads, picture gallery's, and all sorts of stuff.

I would be willing to donate the use of the space for the rpg site to use, i should have plenty of bandwidth.

Mcrow

oh, and I was also thinking of maybe (if it is Ok with everyone) periodically taking the collaborative stuff here and convert it into a PDF (with art added) and hosting it on the proposed "The RPG Site Companion" site. Update all of the Collab stuff every month an republish a new PDF version.

Let me know what you guys thing cuz if it does not sound good to you I'll find another use for the site. :D

I am intrigued by this, and very grateful at what (if I understand correctly) is the offer that the proceeds from your amazon-affiliate site end up going to helping host theRPGsite.

The main question would be, other than the amazon affiliate thing, and the PDFs (which I think are a good idea, btw), what else do you have in mind actually doing there?

Because the main concern for me would be that you do stuff that compliments what we do here, rather than competes with it.  For example, you might have noticed that theRPGsite has a section for Blogs. You might want your own blog to be on your site, but if you were to have room for Blogs in general, you wouldn't really be offering anything that theRPGsite doesn't already, and would end up dividing our strength.

So I think what you need to consider is what you would actually do on there, that would be different/not done on here.

Well, I mostly was jsut listing what I could do.

For the most part I see the companion site being used support The RPG Site community by:
  • Having an Amazon Associated store. If we can encourage those on our site who already buy RPGs(or novels) from amazon to buy using our link in our store, then maybe we could pay for part or all of the cost to host the RPG site.
  • Photos: I can setup a photo album(s) for the site.If people would get soem use out of it.
  • Possibly a Cafe Express Store- For The RPG Site Gear like shirts, hats, bags and such.  I would have to look into it more.
  • Host any files that don't have a place to go on The RPG site.

I'm open to other ideas as well, so let me know if you have any.

So mainly it will be a way to help pay for the hosting for this site, and if it were to make more than that I would put some towards advertising and such. The secondary use would be to fill any gaps that the main site doesn't cover, like photos and things like that.

RPGPundit

I think that would be a fine idea.

If you choose to set it up, we'll link it here somewhere.

I'm not a mod, so I hope you don't mind me wandering into this discussion, but I was thinking it would be good if you could include a "buy it now" link in reviews. This could also link into the Amazon Associate store idea, at least for those products available through Amazon.

That would be a great Idea, but I'm not sure if the system currently allows HTML to be used anywhere in the form.

Mcrow

try posting this HTML in your review of World War Z and see if it works.

Mcrow

dang, i tried it and nope you can't add this type of stuff to reviews. You can do basic stuff like bold, italics, and that sort of thing but links and images don't work.

Reviews can be set to full HTML by a Drupal admin.

I happen to be a Drupal admin.

Which review do you want to play with?

If we can post the above code in the bottom of the review it should come up with a little  amazon sales box for this book.

Thank goodness you guys dig this stuff.. because right now i barely have a fucking clue what you're talking about, much less the faintest notion of how any of it would be done.

I may be the inspiraitional founding father of the current RPGsite, but I'd be utterly lost without good tech people.

well, I have started adding items to the store and have the photo album, main page, site news, downloads page, and a couple other things in the works.

So far it's looking pretty good, a lot more to add to the store, but it's coming along. Within a week or two we should have a most every RPG book on Amzon listed.
