This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Persona Tabletop RPG
« on: July 31, 2014, 05:15:12 AM »
Hi, I'm a new guy here, and a big fan of RPGs in general. It really doesn't matter if it's digital or traditional. Sadly, I live in an area where the Traditional/Tabletop RPGs aren't really played... At all. So, I've never really tried the heavyweight Dungeons and Dragons. I have played some World of Darkness and Fate, and those were really fun. And then there's my favorite RPG series of all time; Shin Megami Tensei - Persona. I really love those games, and one day, just randomly, I decided to start making a Persona Tabletop/Traditional RPG for myself. I've been working on it for almost 7 months now at the time of writing this, and I just recently started Playtesting with one of my friends, just to see how balanced the battlesystem actually was. It's my first personal project of this scale, and I am quite passionate about it. I discovered this forum through google while looking for help with playtesting. And since I take it most of ya'll are veterans when it comes to these kinds of games, I'd like your help.

The game playable. It's basically in Beta, to put it in gaming terms. Now, here's how much I've done:
Rules And Guidelines
Character Sheet (Requires Open Office)
Item Glossary

If you have any sort of questions/opinions about it, and/or want to Playtest, tell me about it on this thread.

It's a good start. You've made me want to know more about Persona. Are the Statistics you're using in the game the same as the ones for the characters in the video game? (I ask that in heavy bias because I always think that's an interesting design decision when trying to move material across media platform like this.)

To answer your question, Yes, most of the stats and mechanics exsist within the games. I had to alter the power of some attacks though, due to the Damage Calculation system I am using. Other than that, all the stats work the same way as they do in the games (for the most part). I tried to stay as close as possible to the original games when it came to the combat aspect (Turn order and stuff like that). Just a fair warning, If you are gonna playtest, make sure you don't enter a dungeon alone. It's very difficult early game, and the game master will kill you in maybe 2-3 fights, unless you have at least 1 party member with you. I found that out the hard way during my 1 Playtesting Session so far. My friend's Character died during his second fight due to both bad luck, and being outnumbered during his first fight. Dungeon Crawling in persona is rarely something you do alone.

Not sure if this thread is dead or not after so long, but some friends and I just found this and would be very interested in playing around with it. I had just a couple questions.

For the Agility stat, how did you plan on having it affect the accuracy and evasion rates of physical and/or magic attacks? I looked through the guide and couldn't find anything about it.

Also, and this is more of a suggestion to consider, do you think that using d100s instead of d10s for attack rolls could be more beneficial? A lot of the skills in-game have an accuracy of 78 or 75 or some such, so using a d100 for an attack roll would allow for more precision. Sukunda and Sukukaja could work the same, the penalty/buff would just be by ten rather than one. It could also make however you choose to implement Agility in the attack roll more balanced, since as it stands, Agility could be an overpowered stat since it affects so many crucial things.

How did you plan on implementing social links without Persona fusion? Are you familiar with Persona Q and the sub-persona system used in that game? I thought that it might work if you assign a sub-persona to each rank of the social links, that way the players could gain access to better sub-personas through improving their social links.

I think everything looks good so far, those are the only questions that I have about it. I really like not having to roll dice for attack AND damage. Just having one die roll to resolve your turn really speeds up the process and leaves room for plenty of role play.
