This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

SERTORIUS PLAYTEST 12/22/2013
This was a playtest involving three players and part of an ongoing campaign. Because one character died in the course of the playtest, the player rolled up a new character midway through. Since the previous playtest report there have been several sessions involving the character’s adventures in Rashua. This is the most recent.

Characters
Vesta: A hasri sertori
Barka: A dwarf sertori
Hafar: A hasri sertori
Shillek: A human sertori (Barka’s player)

Events
The characters went to Besra, intent on earning posts in the government of Queen Sabeena. Queen Sabeena is worshipped as a goddess by the Marites and she is a powerful Sertori. They gained her favor by capturing a magical tiger capable of casting spells and causing large swaths of fire to fall from the sky. While under consideration for positions, they were asked by the queen to investigate a fog that had appeared in the city a few days ago.

The previous session, Hamil (a dwarf Sertori) had tried to commune with the fog using a spell called Unity. This nearly killed him, causing him to go catatonic, but before he did, he was able to communicate the name Talmuth. Vesta, Hafar and Barka ventured into the fog after several failed efforts to probe its nature and limitations (by sending objects and animals into it). Once inside they called out the name Talmuth and glowing eyes appeared around them, demanding they pledge their loyalties to him or die. The characters tried to reason with the entity, but when it became apparent that pledging loyalty involved a hideous transformation, they refused. Three giant mammoths appeared in the fog, attacking the party. Vesta used the spell Hide to vanish into the mist and reach safety. Barka was trampled by a mammoth the first round, and took two wounds. He tried to cast Day Dream, to create an illusion of the god Lorgo, but failed and fell into a reverie for one round. During this time he was trampled again, taking four wounds, enough to kill him. Hafar was struck by a tusk but only wounded slightly and able to escape after he retrieved Barka’s body.

Taking the body of Barka to the Queen, who has the power to resurrect the dead, they asked her to bring back their fallen friend, but she refused. Instead she found another Sertori in the city to work with them named Shillek, a former soldier in her army.

The party laid Barka to rest in the Hema River then resumed their investigation. They asked people in Besra about the name Talmuth, but responses were evasive. Vesta conducted a thorough search of city records. While there was no mention of Tamuth, he was able to deduce that someone had been excised from the records who clearly had existed and pursued this lead, eventually finding a person claiming to have been Talmuth’s neighbor. Shillek went to the queen and asked if the name Talmuth had any meaning. She gave Shillek an item of jewelry and told him that forgiveness would be offered if Talmuth apologized. Going into the mist again, Shillek called Talmuth and presented the jewelry. A path appeared before him leading to a stone house in the center of the mist. Entering he found Talmuth, who looked like a normal human. He learned that Talmuth was the queen’s consort, but they had become enemies because he believed himself a god as well. Shillek convinced him to apologize to the queen, which Talmuth did. The party collected its reward and secured the Queen’s blessing to venture into the mountains to kill giants.

Observations
The system is working very well at this stage of development. There was some question over whether the spell Day Dream should have a lower TN. Presently it is 7, and that seems to work, but it is a bit more difficult than some other spells to cast. However, it is effectively an illusion spell and very useful. The mammoths were sufficiently powerful. They killed one party member and could easily have killed two if they were lucky. Their stomp attacks are especially lethal because they do open damage but hard to land.

The core rules have been finalized before going into layout (expect it to go into layout in about two weeks). Thanks to everyone who gave feedback here and in PM.
