Title: Semantic Questions for a few Terms
Post by: Wulfhelm on February 03, 2023, 06:38:50 AM
As a non-native speaker trying to adapt a few terms for a homebrew, I am seeking opinions on the following terms:

"Resilience": Does this work as a term for physical resilience or is it generally understood to be more psychological?
"Avoidance": Does this work as a synonym for (again, physical) evasion?

To elaborate: I am torn between two sets of names for the four types of "saving throws" I want.

Either:

Discernment (vs deception/illusion), Avoidance (vs traps/dangers, Resolve (vs charm/coercion), Endurance (vs ailments/poisons)

or

Determination (vs charm/coercion), Alertness (vs deception/illusion), Resilience (vs ailments/poisons), Evasion (vs traps/dangers)

If you have input on which set works better altogether, or possible alternatives (I really want to keep the DARE letter scheme, but if another, even better combination suggests itself, I might consider it), I'd be delighted.

I think I know what you need:

Defiance (vs charm/coercion),
Insight (vs deception/illusion),
Remission (vs ailments/poisons),
Evasion (vs traps/dangers)

For when your player characters must face their plights most DIRE!

There's a drawback to this suggestion with Insight, since Insight shares its first letter with Intelligence, but the rest of your acronym fits very well otherwise.

Thanks for the input. Defiance is a good one, I may use that one instead of determination. Insight, unfortunately, is already used for another central statistic in the game. (Though maybe that one could be renamed. Gonna think about it.)
