Quite being so damn reasonable... it makes the rest of us look bad!  ;) :D

Don't worry, life as a PC is still no cakewalk. Just ask any of the burnt and broken husks of the adventures who came before. :D

Part 4

Actually sessions 2 and 3. They finish up the the intro adventure and learn something fundamental (and fundamentally deadly) about he universe.

James McMurray

Part 5

In which they find a powerful artifact and uncover demonic double agents in Geoff.

The called shot feat is up. Nobody actually has it yet, but it came up last session so I tossed something together.

Like SKR, I think that it's bad idea to put called shots into the game.

However, your feat write up is good. :)

Bloody Stupid Johnson

Well, good to see someone is crazy enough to run an epic 3.x game. Good Luck.

On the called shots, there are a number of 3.x feats nowadays that do the equivalent of called shot effects - they're all rogue rather than fighter based though. Complete Adventurer and Complete Scoundrel have feats for Hamstringing, dazing and so on, letting rogues trade in sneak attack dice for specific effects.

James McMurray

It's not my first epic game, and the first one worked out pretty well. I've read a lot of "epic is impossible" posts, but my personal experience has been quite different. "Epic is more difficult" is a very fitting synopsis, but impossible? Not in the slightest. At least not at the low end of the epic spectrum (we've never done anything past 25-ish).

I've seen those feats, but the guy that wanted to do called shots is a psionic fist / rogue. Telling him "sure, become a rogue and we'll talk" wasn't really an option. :)

Bloody Stupid Johnson

I've done it a couple of times with varying degrees of success. No its not impossible but does need more work, I think. Also care.

One party in 3.0 progressed from about 9th-11th level (the characters were all deceased PCs from other games) up to about 27th, I think, and it mostly worked except for some foolish use of houserules/ Mongoose products that made an unstoppable super-ranger/Order of the Bow character. They managed to break my favourite game planet by turning the evil empire into a People's Republic, then went off and earned divine ascension.

Another game recently went level 21 to 23 only before I basically gave up (moving to GURPS and then Savage Worlds with that group). It definitely had moments I remember fondly, but I was too lenient and we had min/maxing and a fairly major ECL miscalculation breaking the system.

Part 6

In which the adventurers save a town besieged by a demonic army.

Are you using miniatures and a battlemap?

How is your Mook Template working out?  Are they easily defeated?  Are they still viable and dangerous?

James McMurray

We're using D20 Pro as an electronic battlemat. It sucks in that it means everyone has a laptop and can be easily distracted when it's not their turn, but it's good in that it makes handling the monk's speed and flying really easy. It also takes most of the work out of juggling enemy hit points and save bonuses.

The mariliths in the last update are the only books they've fought so far. Minimum hit points worked well. They survived one shot and then fell. They turned out to be stronger than the 1:4 ratio I originally thought because of their twill blade barriers, and I awarded 1/2 xp for each.

The next update will have an elite guy in it (+1 CR, double max hit points). It worked ok.

Drohem

Cool. :)

Do you have any experience with MapTool?  If you don't, no worries; but, if you did, how does it compare to D20 Pro?  Are you satisifed with D20 Pro and feel that the price structure is worth it?

James McMurray

Never used map tool. D20 pro works well for us. The group used it before I joined, so some people already had licences, which made it cheaper for me. It's far from perfect and I wish I knew it better, but it gets the job done.
