This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, what do you think of the burning question - female characters - Dan?

It's the eternal question, isn't it? Go for total emulation of source material or go for the most practicable gaming material. As such, i see no reason to make a big deal about gender in the game.

Please allow me to suggest some female role models for you:  Belle Starr, Katie Elder, Clara Barton, "Doc" Susy Anderson, Lola Montez, and Annie Armstrong.

The latter you won't find on the internet, but she is one of my favorites - my great-aunt. At 16, she was protecting my great-father's homestead in Oklahoma while he spent a week going to town.  The Texas rancher across the Salt Fork of the Red River had his cattle driven over their fields, until Annie shot a few. Then, she scattered the cowboys with several rounds.  The next day, the rancher came over, apologized, and eventually married her.  A lot of women in the old west were like her :)

Yep! I gave the question the silent treatment in my Aces and Napoleonic games, though I used the masculine throughout to refer to PCs.

Well the Captain in my IHW game was a woman. The campaign ended in a fade to black possible mutiny. There's a reason why they don't allow chicks on ships - Chicks on Ships, sounds kind of porno.

There's a female midshipman in my current IHW game, though she is pretending to be a male.

Why is she pretending ? Is it a strict historical campaign ? In my games everyone decided to play their own genders, so I said, why the hell not. I mean it was a historical campaign except for the nonexistent gender roles....which I suppose means it was not a historical campaign :D

In my Aces campaign all the players played African American males, so it just really depends on the campaign.

David R

No campaign is historical once the PCs set foot in it, though some are more historical than others... More historical =/= better, BTW! :D

That is just the way the player chose to play it.

How about in the 'Policeman' category M Dupin from Murders in the Rue Morgue by Poe, DS (Detective Sergeant) Cuff from Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone.

Or Sally Lockhart, from Philip Pullman's novels (Victorian protagonist, modern author)

One particular "policeman" I like is Edmund Blackstone, from a series written by Richard Falkirk. He is actually a Bow Street Runner from around 1820 in the books. I liked those novels.

Policemen - and anything else that works at Home would be out of the scope of the game, which takes place Away.
