Thanks, Rob! They take me a varying number of days depending on how complex the scene is. This one took me five days multitasking with writing. I will do as many as I can before the writing is complete, though I always get the "sparse illustrations" ding in reviews. I'm convinced RPGers would prefer their game books entirely in picture form, but then they'd botch about the price... :D

Dude - I just noticed this.

I'm currently running a campaign of dragons in the 19th century, set in the universe of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, Dragons of the Yellow Sea.  Surely this has the same inspiration, right?  How many Napoleonic dragons sources are there?

So tell more about what's going to be in this.  Seems like it could potentially be a good resource for my game even if we're not using the IHW system.

That is indeed my inspiration for the game. The game has:

A random dragon breed generator, covering everything down to color, pattern, and texture of the dragon's outer covering.

Troupe-style play - dragons can be played as PCs.

Air-to-air dragon battle rules adapted from the Aces and Wild Blue games. This sub-system is very 3-dimensional, as altitude is treated as potential energy which is regained by diving.

Promotion system based on Influence - the character's family's political power - and Notice - the character's superior's write-up of his actions. Players compete for Notice to be in charge.

Honor and Practicality mechanic, which gives non-resource bonuses to various social skills, the bonus varying by how honorable or practical a character is.

Personality Traits - Resource bonuses based on quirks of personality, refreshed by session.

Edges - dragons have either a breath weapon or non-resource bonuses basted on situation. Dragons with night vision, for example, have bonuses for anything done at night.

I don't know if any of that floats your boat, John. PM me if you're interested in the playtest document. Your feedback would be appreciated!

That goes for any of you, BTW! :D

Hmm...can you have an all Dragon PC troupe? Got to admit the players playing dragons did not cross my mind.

Edit : Do Dragons have a culture of their own ?

You certainly can have an all-dragon troupe if you wish. It isn't one of the standard ways to play, but there's no reason you can't.

Dragons do have a culture, and a language, of their own, but most humans don't understand either, and it's not detailed in the game. In the game, humans have only recently (c. 1650) stopped hunting dragons as livestock predators and stated domesticating them. Wild dragons are more general and less extreme than the breeds humans have created, and there are also ferals - breed dragons that have gone back into the wild. If you want, you can dispense with the rider characters altogether and have the dragons directly involving themselves in human wars, and the breeds can be purely dragon-created - they are certainly intelligent enough.

Crikey! If you keep buying them, he'll keep writing them! Sounds like a viscious circle.

I'm a graphics fetishist, so I can't get enough. They do take forever, though.

Suddenly, I have flashbacks of DragonStrike... Especially with the different breeds and differing strengths and weaknesses.
Then again, I'm a retrogamer, so vintage video games are anyway one of my first associations with everything.

Is that similar to the Edges introduced in Wild Blue?

I'll come back at the playtest document - I'm currently to busy to promise feedback (I have to check a few items for the German translation of the revised Solar System, and I'm on the deathline for a review), but you'll hear from me as soon as the road ahead looks less congested.

Funny thing is I'm really not a graphics fetishist. I love a good illo, but I don't think they are necessary to enjoyment of a game. I know I'm in the tiny majority here. Outside of comics/graphic novels, I know of no other market that is so insistent on profuse illustration.
