This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Creative Commons Fantasy Art?
« on: October 25, 2008, 11:05:54 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm doing a little project for Christmas for my gaming group (making a nice copy of our homebrew primer and timeline, and expanding it after our last campaign), and was looking for some non-commercial or open fantasy art (not so much anime as trad fantasy, if it can be helped).  Anyone have any links or suggestions they could pass along?  I just want to add a few fitting illustrations (black and white) here and there.  I've already snagged some CC medieval clip art, but some more options wouldn't hurt.  Thanks!

I have a list floating around somewhere of public domain line art and such that I was going to use for my own projects.  Let me dig that up and see if you like any of it.

Your hint about CC medieval art intrigues me, however...

Thank you!

The medieval clipart collections are here (not much) and here (public domain).  There's also this, but I don't think its CC.

Karen's Whimsy has a goodly swath, that was one I was going to post.  Here are a few others:

These are public domain:

This is a list of other public domain sites:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/links/clipart.html

Not much line art, but some good images:
http://www.backgroundsarchive.com/

This one will take some digging around in, but I think there are some images with the old texts:
http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

Jupiter is royalty-free, but I think you still have to license the images.  Still, a good place to hit up for ideas.

Another listing of sites with public domain-like usage, but you will have to check the sites individually:
http://www.photographiclibraries.com/index.php

A bunch of public domain images, CC approved, if you are looking specifically for that:
http://public-domain.zorger.com/

Geek  Philosopher wants a link back if you use the images, I dunno if that works out for your project:

The Text Archive also has some CC specific stuff:

Hurrah! I too love this thread, thanks Zach. I am going to run a story on the Free RPG Blog about where authors can get some free images to spice up their PDFs. :)

Excellent!  I have another, but it takes some work to get images:

Yeorae Carving, Korea

You will need Quicktime, a screen capture/image manipulation utility (GIMP does both), and it messes up your cursor while it is open.

All worth it, however.  You get 360ยบ views of some of the most beautiful temples, ruins, and wilderness areas on Earth. I snagged the link from a thread here a long while ago, but I have some stunning pictures captured for that authentic feel.

The front-page saying that the owners of the site go through other galleries to find their pictures, plus the lack of any evident license, plus the lack of any links to the artists' sites or emails (including the gallery they got the picture from), makes me a bit suspicious of this site.

Sometimes you will find clip art at big art supply stores. I think the big publisher is Dover. Any way, there are some really cool pieces that are the advertising type similar to the tight pinch block. It is one of the things i love to see in old ads like from a newspaper , they have a drawing of a guy in a hurry, or the mom in the kitchen with the poodle skirt.

For the Majestic Wilderlands I used the Wikimedia Commons to find public domain art. The best success I found was among the romantic artists  and art dealing with history.
