This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Many RPG books focus on stats and background / history / ecology info.  I don't think any of these things enhances the sense of wonder you want in a fantasy world.  They kill the mystery.

Actual gameplay can be another thing though -- it really depends on how much exposure the players have to the boring stuff.

Fun with tautologies!  Yay!

Although, Stuart hits on something that does tend to bother me:  Overabundance of setting detail.

I don't want a gazeteer for a roleplaying game.  I don't want Forgotten Realms.  

I want a fun game system, combined with a setting that gives me cool ideas and themes and archetypal stories to play with, and lets me fill in the details for my players.  

A good RPG is a collection of ideas and the tools to run wild with those ideas.  

For a good example, I think the Decipher Star Trek books were the most brilliant corebooks ever written for a roleplaying game.  Because they are goddamn littered with plot or story or setting ideas.  I don't just mean the parts specifically describing the world, which are surprisingly light on detail, but more the constant throwaway references through out the book that seem to be there almost entirely to fill the reader's head with crazy ideas.

I started keeping a notebook with me when I read the corebooks.
