This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

...still work for at least a week or two.

I'm looking for ideas or suggestions of some kind of 'Big Disaster" scenario to start off a roleplaying game session or twowhere cellphones and satellites still are working for the first week or two.

The "Big Event" or "Big disaster" I want to be something thats kid of global or at least continental on its scale.

Any thoughts?

Well, nukes are out then.
Plague? Zombie apocalypse ?
In a "robots take over the world" scenario mobile phones might work for awhile, but be problematic since they might be able to trace it. Same might go for alien invasion.

nano-tech run amok?
:hmm:  Perhaps a nano-tech and biological symbiosis, initialy designed for application in the "health" industry, that mutates due to an unusual Solar discharge?
:)
Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

In Systems Failure, I imagine that cell-phones would work for a long while.  The Bugs like keeping electrical systems functioning and probably hope that surviving humans use their phones so they can be triangulated for capture.

Won't that only kill 1/2 the population, leaving behind an Amazon society keeping the surviving real men in captive quarantine for breeding purposes?

With a lot of disasters, cell phone systems get over loaded because so many people start trying to use them at the same time. You also need the surface infrastructure to support their use.

So -- no space rocks, no EMP / nuke, no tidal wave, no earthquake...

The best and easiest would be things that kill a lot of people without knocking down a lot of the buildings. Zombies are a good one. Really, any kind of massive illness will do. Illness is really good because it keeps a few people alive to keep the infrastructure up. You still need power to the towers, which means you still need power plants.

Hoping to avoid the religious angle.

Knowing my usual group I'd likely have two pagans, a wiccan, a studious Jew, and an agnostic as players.

What, they can't stretch a bit? I thought this was "role" playing.

Ok - alien invaders disguised as angels.

Now that might be attempting a Russell T. Davies take on things.

That percentage may be highly inaccurate guess-wise.
PLENTY of men would be left behind - both heterosexual and homosexual men, as well as bisexuals.
After all, Real Men! never buy or use the gimmick devices that Aos refers to.

You can't.

Any apocalypse scenario is going to be deemed an "Act of God" by a segment of the population because religion is part of human culture. There are plenty of examples of this in the post-apocalypse genre. Do your homework.
"Meh."
