This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Terror in the Badlands- our third session of AD&D1e

...As the game began, Norcon (James Skach) had just arrived in Lyca to catch up with Tangal (DeadUematsu) and Tili-Teshub (Settembrini). Tangal could not locate Tili, but planned on setting out for the dragon bones anyhow, assuming Tili-Teshub would soon catch up. Norcom caught up with Tangal and his three hirelings, and quickly joined the expedition.

They travelled south for most of the day, until they reached the Badlands, and Tangal began searching for the dragon burial grounds. He was not immediately successful, and the group spent several hours scrambling up and down out of ravines and through barren gullies. After several exhausing hours, one of the hirelings was pounde upon by an especially horrible and vicious black wolf. Tangal attempted to shoot it but although both arrows hit the creature, they seemed to have no effect. The hireling was torn apart savagely as the other's watched. Norcon, Tangal and the remaning two hirelings ran for their lives, but luckily the wolf busied himself with ripping apart the pitiful man-at-arms.

Everyone agreed that this was no ordinary wolf, and indeed Tangal followed it a little ways to see it transform back into a manlike form. They decided it was some form of Lycanthrope.

Tangal made two trips to recover the Man-At Arms' equipment, and finally the body for burial, but it seemed obvious that the other two hirelings had had enough. Demoralized by the  savage killing of their friend (and somewhat encouraged in both resentment and rebellion by Norcon), the two determined that they would no  leave Tangal's service at first opportunity.

Around this time, Tili-Teshub the ranger arrived, and convinced the group to continue hunting for the dragon bones. So, far from home, the group did just that. With luck, the group discovered them in a hidden sandy basin at the base of a series of treacherous cliffs and crags. They set about quickly harvesting the vertebrae.. and managed to gather up a good supply just as a group of creatures known as "Sala-men" (or "Salamander-kin", or sometimes "Firenewts") appeared and drove them off threateningly. The group made a hasty escape while the Firenewts descended the cliffs.

The exhausted party travelled through the night (which further annoyed the two demoralized hirelings) until they finally reached Lyca  again. Thereafter, the party paused for two weeks to consolidate training and to make contacts within the city. Norcon officially joined one of the two main thieves guilds of Lyca (the Monkey's Fist gang) and although he didn't have enough money to complete his training all the way through, he did get assigned a special mission.

The party regrouped and headed back to Ravens Hollow, after hearing local rumors (a mention of "Phanes", a type of harmless woodland creature that were being raised for sport by the wealthy of Lyca) and reports of unrest by the Salamen.) Tangal hired new men as his the other two deserted him upon arrival in Lyca. The sale of the dragon bones went very well, however.

After regrouping, the party headed south, back towards the Korrgard Caves, and encountered proof of the Salamen's violence- a burning wagon and a pair of murdered farmers. Undaunted, they continued on, and this time, Tili-Teshub the ranger uncovered an alternate entrance to the caves, with enough tracks to reveal that the alternate entrance probably led to a place where slaves were trafficked. The group decided to continue on towards the entrance they knew of, entered the caves and headed to where they had left out earlier.

Soon they encountered a few remnants of the original group of Bowlers (animated living boulders) they had fought in the first dungeon expedition. Norcon remembered the tactic from the previous expedition and ran to the ledge. The rest of the group fought their way there, while Tili Teshub remained a little behind and dispatched the attacking Bowlers once and for all. The Bowlers leave behind geode cores when they die, so the group gathered several cheap gemstones after killing off the monsters.

Back in the gulley cave where the rope bridge was destroyed, the party noted evidence of an attempt at repair of the rope bridge, as well as a new ladder, and possibly the tracks of goblinoids. The bodies of the dead slavers had been dragged off. They continued onto the other side, taking the ladders with them, and pressed further into the caves.

Finally they reached a cave with a brackish pool, and were ambushed by a trio of savage trogoldytes. Most of the group initially hung back, daunted by the smell. Tili-teshub charged into battle, but was unfortunately caught out alone in the melee and brutally mauled by teeth and fangs. He soon found himself fighting for his life until Tangal's henchmen and Tangal himself moved in to bring down one and then another trogolodyte. Tili Teshub was bloodied at the end but victorious.

The group searched the room and found some treasure at the bottom of a shallow, murky pool in the cave. They agreed to make camp there and return to the adventure at first opportunity.

I'd join if I could, believe you me.

That group needs a Paladin.

You are implying you´d be able to roll up a Paladin...quite an assumption!

Haha, well that's a good word for Tili's state at the end of that battle. :headache:

Feel free to embellish anything. You'll notice I also put up a tentative report from Shevin the Sage about the Spawning Pit on the wiki. I am going to continue working on it but this has most of what I want to report.

You were close to dying! I think if the trogs had won initiative on that last round it might have been even worse.

I never, ever encountered the word "bloodied" before 4e was announced, so there you go.

BTW, it means "covered in blood", as the dic says. Funny how 4e emphasizes HP totally not being physical damage. But if my "resolve to fight" is down, blood rains on my body...

Wonder what happens if the a "Martial Leader" plays his Battle Cry and the blood disappears ...

EDIT: fun fact, the SECOND google hit upon entering this word is a WoW reference: "bloodied feathers of thingamajig"

I was using it in the "Invictus" sense--

"...In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloodied, but unbowed..."
