While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). AD&D1e - Orcs and Snake! -- Play by Browser report!

Ok, I am gearing up for a play-by-browser game I have mentioned in a few areas, and Settembrini was helping work out a few issues with the program. Turn s out, if I run ScreenMonkey in basic mode, it works pretty good. Settembrini jst pointed his firefox browser at the address I gave him and clicked there .. and we had maps plus chat. We throw voice-chat on top of that and it's all good.

So anyhow, here's a brief report.

Settembrini's ranger Tili was wandering through some caves in the "sample map" I was drawing to test the program and it quickly morphed into a real game.

At first Tili heard the voices of the orcs. He quickly squeezed against the wall and tried to surprise the two orcs who were patrolling the passages. Luck was not on his side, however, and the orcs saw him..

With his cover blown, he broke and ran, and the orcs gave chase through a series of passages until he managed to give them the slip. When they moved past, he noticed how they paused fearfully by a side passage, and chose the moment to strike, by jumping out.

...And Tili blew his surprise attack a second time.

The orcs roared and charged him, and one of them nicked him with his battleaxe (minimal damage). Tili caught the charge of the first orc head on with his sword and ran him through... and the orc fell dying at his feet.  The second orc readied his greatclub.

The two combatants squared off and circled each other in the cave passage, making sweeping attacks and feinting at each other, but neither one hitting.
After a couple rounds of sweating and parrying each other, the greatclub wielder snarled a threat in broken, accented common.

This made Tili reconsider his strategy. He switched to an attempt to overbear the orc with a leg sweeping tackle, perhaps to interrogate him. But the rules in the AD&D1e DMG are very specific:  the armed opponent gets an attack on the overbearer. The greatclub wielder was caught off guard by Tili's sudden change in tactics, but managed to land a solid blow anyway.

But it was not enough to stop Tili. He slammed the orc down on the ground, stunning him. When the orc came to after being stunned, Tili had him at swords point (and 1 hit point).

The ranger interrogated the orc about the narrow passage, and the orcs threat. The orc had called upon the deity Baghtru. This went back and forth for a while. Finally Tili let the orc back up after learning the tribe of the orcs in the area. He was determined to head down the narrow passage.

The surviving orc ran.

Tili turned and took a beaten silver armband from the dead orc before advancing down the narrow side-tunnel. As he got closer the smells got worse until he finally reached a bowl-shaped cave filled with offal and debris. He paused at the mouth of the cavern and listened until he saw it (making his surprise check this time). the Orcs had a giant snake.. as long as three cows, as big around as a man's waist. Tili fired an arrow at it, which missed. The snake suddenly perked its head up, hissing angrily.

He then turned and ran, and the snake gave chase, pursuing him down the corridor at speed. When he reached the edge of the tunnel, the snake attempted to strike but missed.

The snake then took notice of the dead orc and paused, and that was all the distraction Tili needed to escape. He made his way out of the caverns and back to town, a little richer (but not much), but determined to find new companions.

Anyone else want to play with us? This was just a goof-- a single solo encounter, but the Sunday game is going to be full blown AD&D1e! You just need a browser, an internet connection, and hopefully Skype. We didn't even bother with Skype this time.
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

If there can\'t be a TPK against the will of the players it\'s not an RPG.- Pierce Inverarity
